Live Earth: 7 Countries Of Concerts On 7-7-07

live_earth_logo.jpgMadonna is slated to sing for Mother Earth…The Red Hot Chili Peppers will rock for our own blue rock…And youth everywhere will no doubt hear the call and get jazzed when tickets go on sale today for Live Earth, continents in concert for a climate in crisis!

Live 8 producer Kevin Wall is sending an SOS to the world, teaming with former VP Al Gore, and other Save Our Selves allies to bring us 150 of the world’s top musicians, and empowering youth in the mother of all concerts to curb global warming! Sure beats those stagnant flipcharts and laser pointers!

When Shaping Youth wrote about our own green tweens squirming and twitching during Inconvenient Truth, I had my worries, but Live Earth is exactly the type of positive media event that will draw far beyond youth energy for mass scale planetary power. Live Earth Co-chair Gore said:

“We hope the energy created by Live Earth will jump start a massive public education effort…Live Earth will help us reach a tipping point that’s needed to move corporations and governments to take decisive action to solve the climate crisis.”

Live Earth will stream on MSN to an audience of more than 2 billion via TV, radio, film, and the web on 7-7-07, with seven concerts in seven countries and ONE unprecedented call to action with a deepening sense of urgency. In keeping with the 7s theme, 7 shorts from SOS will premiere at co-founder Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Film Festival, opening this week, too.

The event crackles with electricity, hope, and promise of mobilization as Live Earth joins with The Climate Group, Stop Climate Chaos and The Alliance for Climate Protection reaching webheads and media celebs to take digital action.

Sheesh. And I thought MTV’s “save the planet from your mobile” was a cool idea…Kids text BREAK to 41001 and receive action alerts on how to “Break the Addiction” (to oil and consumption, and um, dependence on pricey text messaging?)

The power-packed U.K. line-up, and plethora of U.S. performances look stellar…(Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, Melissa Etheridge, The Police, Sheryl Crow and tons more) so it’s obvious they’ve produced a ‘mashup’ of music styles and tastes for every age, everywhere…Incredibly appropo, since global warming impacts the same.

They’re wrapping the globe with ‘one world’ interdependence and seeding a movement that’s reaching critical mass…

From Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach and Johannesburg’s Cradle of Human Kind, to Tokyo, Wembley, Sydney & Giant’s Stadiums, this mega-music event is slated to trigger the formation of a new, multi-year foundation with proceeds seeding a massive mobilization…

It reminds me of that nursery rhyme, repurposed for media:

“And when she was good, she was very, very good…”

THIS is what using the power of media for positive change is all about… Shaping Youth with meaningful messages.

It’s exactly what WE’D like to see more of. You?

  1. Thanks for the shout out on the Shaping Youth Blog for Live Earth, and particularly the Alliance for Climate Protection (www.allianceforclimateprotection.org).

I am a fan of Shaping Youth, read the blog regularly, and am hoping we will get a chance now to connect. I am directing the interactive efforts for the Alliance — preparing to launch a dynamic, engaging, interactive experience to help people learn how to take meaningful action to reduce their carbon footprint (we are looking to go way beyong just providing calculators and to do lists). Reaching young people, across the board and around the world, is obviously a major priority for us — and my role is to make sure that in addition to just reaching them, that we actually are able to have a meaningful conversation and support real engagement. I hope that the Shaping Youth community will want to play an active role in this.

I would welcome your input, and maybe even explore some ways to collaborate with you and Shaping Youth as we put together the plan over the next several months. Drop a note when you get a chance, thanks.
