Feb. 20, 2009 Derek Lee, one of our UCLA pals, is dedicated to dancing 26 hours straight with thousands of students tomorrow starting at 11am.
He’s inching toward his goal with only a tiny bit more to go, and you can help put him over the top as he amps up awareness to help kids who are infected with or affected by the disease. Dance Marathon has raised nearly $1.37 million to support HIV-positive children around the world to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and it’s now the largest student-organized philanthropic event on the West Coast! (check out this inspiring youth video if you want to renew your faith in humanity, dance on, kids!)
What better way to “have fun, do good” than to kick it into high gear and dance you’re um, socks off all weekend to make some kids happy campers (literally!) Project Kindle and OneHeartland are two of the camp programs giving HIV-affected children the camp experience of a lifetime through the pediatric AIDS foundation. And…dancing is great exercise too. Talk about a healthy cause and effect all around…
Using social media and youth mobilization (plus celebs, great people, cause-driven collegiates, and activism) last year they were able to raise almost $385,000 (this year with the tanked economy they’re lagging about $100K, so help out a bit if you can?) As you can see on Derek’s page, he’s ALMOST there…Oh, and there’s of course a Facebook group too…
Here’s the full breakdown of how you can make a difference…
$8 – Buys two shots of Nevirapine (one for the mother, one for the child), which cuts the risk of mother to child transmission of AIDS in half
$20 – Buys HIV medication for one child for one month
$25 – Provides birthday presents for five children at camp
$200 – Provides HIV/AIDS education materials for awareness programs
$250 – Provides medical supplies for campers who need daily medication
Good luck, guy. Better get to bed early tonight…11am it all begins! I know kids have stamina, but 26 hours? Yowza.
I hope they have lots of water and a great play list…
Rock on for the cause, Derek. Best of luck…
