Rachel Simmons Tonight at GunnHS, Palo Alto!

rsSept. 24, 2009 S.F. Bay Area readers, reminder Rachel Simmons is speaking TONIGHT for free at Palo Alto’s Gunn High School (details here) about her new book The Curse of the Good Girl (living proof of same right here with yours truly, heh)

I interviewed Rachel Simmons about what all has transpired in media and marketing since her decade of research on relational aggression with the internationally acclaimed Odd Girl Out

I’m anxious to hear what she has to say on some of the trend-tracking fronts to help girls hold onto their emotional intelligence while navigating the sea change of new cues comin’ at them 24/7 in the media maelstrom.

Rachel’s national tour is sponsored by our friends at New Moon Girl Media which I love (and wrote about here) along with the National Coalition of Girls Schools, so this makes it a double-whammy of girl power punch for voices that need to be heard. Here’s a list of her tour on raising confident, authentic girls in case she’s headed your way…

gliHer Girls Leadership Institute seems to be a refreshing antidote to pop culture’s uncorked cues, so I hope she speaks to how we can make use of some of GLI’s techniques and tactics at home.

Ping me on Twitter @ShapingYouth if you’ll be there to connect in person tonight at 7pm. (no reg required so impromptu works, my kinda gig!)

p.s. Rachel just fielded questions in a text chat on The Motherhood Tuesday, so you can read the transcripts to get a feel for the content and what’s on people’s minds via their Q&A.

Other places to find her? Our new Shaping Youth content partner’s site (see sidebar) at RosalindWiseman.com…And, this media maven has hit ‘the majors’ in just two weeks time with The Curse of the Good Girl featured in major national news outlets here:

Newsweek
Time
The Today Show
She is Too Fond of Books
WAMC/npr

I’m excited to finally meet Rachel face to face, since we seem to be boppin’ around similar environs with shared peers and networks. (except I’m press phobic/media shy)

Hope to see you there too…I have a feeling it will be brimming with like-minded souls.

Who is Rachel Simmons? Author of Curse of the Good Girl

“A Rhodes Scholar and Vassar graduate, Simmons is a pioneer in exploring the phenomenon of female aggression. Her illuminating body of work delves deeply into the lives of adolescent girls in a manner which is both objective and empathetic. What she finds is a disconcerting, and yet highly accurate, reflection of the issues affecting women in this new era of feminism. And, through her experience Simmons crosses gender boundaries by empowering both men and women in how to negotiate conflict and develop healthier relationships. “(—APB Speakers Bureau)
