April 24, 2009 Back to our green media focus in a minute, since we’re all trying to figure out whether somethin’ can be done about all this consumption? But first, here’s some fabulous news for change agents out there.
Just in time for our Consuming Kids screening and powerhouse panel tonight in Berkeley, (and again Sun. 4-26 in San Jose and Tues. 4-28 in Palo Alto) MEF , the Media Education Foundation is enabling grassroots individuals to affordably host your own screening of the film in YOUR community… just like we do for our ongoing parent/youth education film fests for Shaping Youth.
This “screen a movie, make a difference” model is MUCH more viable for fast mobilization, as it doesn’t eat into already crimped people power nor require tons of helping hands. With the economy tanking it’s all the more reason that smaller screenings of important films work better than massive outreach, so I’m thankful for MEF instigating this mind-shifting so that we can all continue our efforts with minimal outlay.
Hear that Eco Mom Alliance? Colleagues at Eco Child’s Play? All of you ‘lazy environmentalists’, amazingly active green go-to-gals, green bloggers and not-quite-crunchy parents out there? This is your opportunity to pay it forward…
My biggest gripe with hosting larger events like our Two Angry Moms Delancey Street Theater presentation in S.F. is that little nonprofits like me can actually LOSE money without the proper underwriting resources, so we’ve scaled back to ‘house party’ mode and smaller venues for ALL our educational films.
With this Consuming Kids special CCFC screening rate of less than $25, you can spread the ‘less is more’ mantra in ecowarrior mode, teach your children well, and save some greenbacks to boot by taking advantage of grassroots mobilization.
Brave New Theaters is the icing on the cake, as they give you a free, easy and essential organizing tool to make it all turnkey and smooth.
I admit, I’ve been slack about using BNT consistently now that we’re doing smaller events as our place only holds so many…But this has kicked me into ‘reminder’ mode to COMMIT to posting all of our ‘classroom size’ screenings…
20-30 seems to be the perfect intimate setting for us. (think of it for your next social GNO, sustainable students screening, or as an educational Twitterfest gathering?) It’s a great way to raise awareness and promote important films via the web, school tie-ins, youth groups, and social media communities without any hassle and all the deposits and confirmations and triple-checking event-planning hooha.
Soon we’ll be getting back to our screenings in outdoor summer film fests too, (including Where Do the Children Play and Stuart Brown with his new book Play) but I’ve needed to focus on our pilot program being launched soon inside Elf Island to benefit the kids at Fresh Producers and instill virtual nutrition via informal learning fun. Stay tuned for more on that…Meanwhile here’s a recap synopsis of tonight’s event and the Consuming Kids trailer again to give you a feel for the tonality, in case you missed it!
“Academic rockstars are descending upon U.C. Berkeley April 24th, as CCFC leaders speak in person on the commercialization of childhood and the impact on our culture!
Shaping Youth is proud to be a media sponsor of the S.F. Bay Area Premiere of the movie Consuming Kids, and co-sponsor of this all-star panel in time for ’spring cleaning’ 2009 to get rid of all this consumption.
Dr. Susan Linn and Dr. Allen Kanner, two pivotal thought leaders and child advocates on the impact of the commercialization of childhood will be IN PERSON as panelists for Q&A following the screening, moderated by Michele Simon, policy director of the alcohol watchdog group Marin Institute and author of one of my favorite nutrition/media literacy resources, Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health & How to Fight Back!
I urge you ALL to join me in supporting this vital film and the red carpet panel of thought leaders in person.
And yes, I love that they’ve used MEDIA to deliver the message…I’ll be MARKETING their work far and wide. See you there…TONIGHT! April 24, 2009 Screening of Consuming Kids 7pm: FREE!
